If you're worried about price or range on the 2024 Ioniq 5 N EV, you might be missing the point.

The 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N all-electric performance SUV has finally arrived in U.S. form, debuting at the Los Angeles Auto Show in all its lowered, more aggressive glory. This performance EV is ready to dominate America's drag strips, drift courses, and racetracks with up to 641 horsepower and enough tricks up its sleeve to make a seasoned magician blush. Sure, we've already awarded the standard Ioniq 5 ourMotorTrendSUV of the Year title, and we've even already driven it on track . But now we finally have solid specs and packaging details for when the stylish performance EV finally goes on sale here early next year, and it's going to be a hot one.
2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N: Lower, Wider, Longer
The performance changes to the U.S. Hyundai Ioniq 5 N result in a car that is consequently 0.79 inches lower to the ground, 2.0-inches wider to fit bigger 21-inch forged aluminum wheels and summer 275/35R21 Pirelli P Zero high performance tires, and 3.2 inches longer thanks to a huge rear diffuser. It's not clear if the rims pictured are the carbon-reinforced aluminum wheels previously advertised as a future option on N models, or if that will be a different option available after launch.
2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N: Orange on Orange?
The fascia design adds a chin spoiler and active air flaps for aero management, black front bumper, and in back we get the addition of a rear wing spoiler with an integrated triangular brake light, black bumper cover, and the very welcome addition of a rear window wiper. Front and rear body edges get a Luminous Orange Matte accent color, and the exterior paint finishes the car will launch with includes: Performance Blue Matte, Abyss Black Pearl, Atlas White, Soultronic Orange Pearl, with a Ecotronic Gray Matte color to be available later in production.
2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N: Interior Design
Inside an effort has been made to use sustainable and recycled materials and pigments, the two-tone bucket seats with reinforced bolsters are mounted about an inch lower, the pedals and footrest have been revised, knee and shin braces have been added, and there's a new redesigned steering wheel with drive mode selection, N-Boost button, and paddle shifters that, when engaged together, act as a sort of clutch kick to enable easier drifting (though interestingly Hyundai hasn't adopted the typical "performance" flat-bottom steering wheel concept here). All interiors will be black with performance blue accents, for now.
2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N: Feedback Logic
Starting with the body-in-white shell of a standard Ioniq 5, the N version adds 42 more welding points with 6.9 feet of structural adhesive added to improve chassis dynamics. Motor and battery mountings have been reinforced with strengthening work also done to the front and rear subframes. WRC-inspired front and rear integrated drive axles in the e-motors handle the increased torque output while also reducing some mass, and the rack-mounted motor-driven power steering system has been tuned for a quicker ratio and enhanced "feedback logic" of registering how the tires are meeting the road.
2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N: More Like Ioniq 5 Grin?
Under the hood, or uh, I suppose the entire damn car in the case of an EV, is an 84 kWh battery pack upgraded with more cooling area and volume and a battery chiller for temperature management at the track, which shoots electrons to a 223 horsepower front electric motor and 378 hp rear e-motor for a total drivetrain output of 601 hp going through all four wheels. That power equation can shift (for limited 10-second periods) to as much as 235 hp front and 406 hp rear for a total output of 641 hp and 568 lb-ft in the available N Grin Boost driving mode. With N Launch Control (which automatically engages N Grin Boost), the Ioniq 5 N should get from 0 to 60 mph as quick as 3.25 seconds, with an e-limited top speed of 162 mph.
2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N: Brakes
Brakes are upgraded to a 4-piston 15.75 inch setup in front and 1-piston 14.2 inch setup in the rear; Hyundai previously claimed up to 90 percent of braking is managed by e-motor regeneration in street driving, which shifts to around 50 percent on track, with the mechanical brakes making up the difference where it counts.
2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N: Optimized Slides
N Torque Distribution provides fully variable front and rear torque distribution with 11 driver-adjustable levels of performance on offer, managing an e-LSD at the rear with even more road data pulled from additional wheel sensors, and offering more fidelity of control thanks to bigger dampers through the electronically-controlled suspension management system. With N Drift Optimizer, the drivetrain can shift more power to the rear wheels for controllable sideways action if so desired, with the aforementioned shift-paddle engaged torque/clutch kick function to help unlock the rubber.
2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N: Battery Management
The car also adds independent radiators for individual battery and motor cooling management, and the battery preconditioning settings include specific setups for "Drag" speed runs or more lap-oriented "Track" driving to best protect the pack cells while offering the most performance, whether it be as much power at once for a short burst or keeping the pack cool and maintain consistent performance during repeated laps. Hyundai previously stated a goal of making sure the car could manage near half-hour track stints before taking a break, or for it to be able to take part in a typical full high-performance driving experience course. The Ioniq 5 and its new N also offer Vehicle-to-Load charge functionality, using an available cord adapter to suck juice out of the car's battery for any separate, powered appliance.
2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N: Four-Pot Jet Fighter?
There's also three manufactured sound options, ranging from a mock-I4 unit to a jet fighter emulation, to provide the driver with more engaging feedback in theory. The optional N e-shift function can simulate the gearing of an 8-speed dual-clutch box on an ICE car if you're not down for the continuous stream of electrons an EV otherwise affords, or it better helps you map and engage the track corners, perhaps.
2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N: Pick Your Pillar
All of this work on the Ioniq 5 N is meant to clearly define three unique driving experiences, which Hyundai labels "Corner Rascal," "Racetrack Capability," and "Everyday Sportscar." The everyday concept is supported by comfort and convenience features like a standard wireless phone charger, USB-C power connectivity, a rear wiper, paired with a 601 hp sled you can play with. If you want a little more, the N Grin, N Shift, N Drift and more features unlock more of the rascal and racetrack fun, and even then, you can go for full-on sprint or prime the car instead for endurance runs. Hyundai has crafted the ultimate sandbox sports car; an EV that can simulate shifts, drift like a king, shoot down a drag strip, brake on a dime, charge fairly quickly, and even bring your electric lawnmower back to life if you ask it to. That's incredible.
2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N: Range and Price
The only two major questions left are what the impact on the available range on a single charge will be thanks to all of these upgrades and changes, which will likely be revealed closer to the car's on-sale launch in the U.S. in early 2024; the standard Ioniq 5 goes an EPA-estimated 260 miles on a full charge of its 77.4 kWh battery pack, but it's difficult to extrapolate that into a potential N model range. The other big question is price, which we expect to be matched or slightly more than that of a similar 576-hp Kia EV6 GT performance EV, which starts at around $63,000.
